In 124, he received from Hadrian the Roman citizenship, and from this time assumed the name of Flavius. Arrian was one of the best writers of his time. He was a close imitator of Xenophon both in the subjects of his works and in the style in which they were written. The most important of them is his History of the expedition of Alexander the Great, in seven books, which was based upon the most trustworthy histories written by the contemporaries of Alexander.
