Lethe
One of the rivers of hell, whose waters were imbibed by the souls of the dead which had been for a certain period confined in Tartarus. Those who drank of this river forgot whatever they had previously known. In this sense the word is constantly used by the poets. Thus Shakespeare in Henry IV., part ii. act v. scene 2, says: "May this be washed in Lethe and forgotten."
