Pausanias

A Spartan general who greatly signalized himself at the battle of Plataea against the Persians. He afterward, at the head of the Spartan armies, extended his conquests in Asia, but the haughtiness of his behavior made him many enemies. He offered, on certain conditions, to betray Greece to the Persians, but his perfidy was discovered, on which he fled for safety to a temple of Minerva, where he was starved to death, в. C. 471.
