Cagliostro

cal-yos-tro, Count, the assumed name of an Italian adventurer, Guiseppe Balsamo (1743-1795.) He was a native of Palermo. The "count" passed himself off as a nobleman of rank. He is notorious for impositions in the capitals of Russia, England, France, and elsewhere. He was imprisoned in the Fleet of London and in the Bastille of Paris. He died in prison at Rome.
