the first day of the Roman month. The nones were the ninth day before the ides, both days included, and fell on the fifth day of the month, save in March, May, July, and October, when the nones fell on the seventh day. The ides were the eighth day after the nones, and fell on the thirteenth day of the month, save in March, May, July, and October, when they fell on the fifteenth day. Dates were reckoned backward, so many days before the ides, the nones, or the calends. The second of August was called the fourth day before the nones of August; the sixth day of August was the eighth day before the ides of August; and the fourteenth day of August was the nineteenth day before the calends of September. The calends, nones, and ides were reckoned as the first day in each case. Thus the last day of each month was called the second day before the calends of the following month. See Calendar
