Choosers of the Slain

or Valkyrior, val-kir'i-or, in Scandinavian mythology, warlike virgins, wearing armor and mounted on horseback. They were sent by Odin to every battlefield to select the heroes that should be slain and admitted to Valhalla. When the Valkyrior or Valkyrs rode forth on their errands, a strange, gleaming light flashed from their armor, known to mortals as "Aurora Borealis." See Valhalla
