Clarissa Harlowe

a novel by Samuel Richardson, published in 1748. It is in seven volumes, and the progress of events is narrated in letters written by the principal characters to each other and to friends. The book is named for its heroine. It is considered Richardson's masterpiece. See Richardson; Novel
