Cobold

or Kobold, kobold, a domestic spirit in northern mythology. According to the Edda, Odin formed the dwarfs from dust. They were of two sorts. The gnomes occupy deep caverns. The cobolds are house spirits and, if kindly treated, nestle beside the hearth and are a protection to the home. See Gnome; Edda
