Craik, Dinah Maria Mulock

Dinah Maria Mulock (1826-1887), an English novelist and poet, commonly known as Miss Mulock. Her first novel, The Ogilvies, was published in 1849. Her reputation was made, however, and is maintained by John Halifax, Gentleman, published in 1857. The story was circulated widely, and was translated into several languages. It is still popular. It is the touching, yet optimistic story of the simple life of a noble man. In all Mrs. Craik produced about twenty novels. A Brave Lady, A Noble Life, and Olive are among them. They are entertaining stories of wholesome tone. Philip, My King, and Douglas, Tender and True, are two of Mrs. Craik's poems which one desires to know. The latter has been set to music, and at one time had great popularity.
