Cuneiform (ku-ne'1-form) Writing, a primitive system of writing in use among the Chaldeans, Babylonians, and Assyrians. The name is derived from the Latin word cuneus, meaning wedge, and has reference to the triangular shape of the characters. The writer impressed his characters with a stylus on soft clay tablets which were afterward kiln baked. If stone was the material, the characters were necessarily cut with the chisel.
