a silver coin of the Roman Republic and Empire. It was worth about sixteen cents of United States money. It is the silver penny of the New Testament. "Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's." Luke xx: 24. The abbreviation d. for the English penny is derived from the Latin denarius.
