drez'den, the capital of Saxony. It is situated on the Elbe 387 feet above sea level. It is not without commercial importance. Dresden claims first place among North German cities as an art center. The Dresden picture gallery, fostered by a long line of Saxon princes and prime ministers, ranks, both as to building and contents, with the first galleries in the world. Among other treasures is the priceless Sistine Madonna. Were it not that a large part of the people, as in every European city, are in poverty, the galleries, theaters, parks, palaces, and equipages would persuade the tourist that Dresden is a paradise of leisure-loving people. The present population is about 395,000.
