Exodus

the second book of the Bible. It is so called because it describes the exodus or departure of the Israelites from Egypt. Aside from its sacred character, the book is of historical importance, as giving the Hebrew account of the origin of their peculiar laws and institutions. There is no disposition on the part of critics to deny that the Hebrews resided for a time in Egypt and that on occasion they made their escape and wandered in the wilderness ere reaching the promised land.
