Faure

for, Felix (1841-1899), a French statesman. He was a native of Paris and died in that city. Faure was for a time a tanner, and later a shipowner of Havre. He commanded a company of volunteers in the Franco-Prussian War, and was decorated with the ribbon of the Legion of Honor. In 1881 he was elected to the French Assembly. A knowledge of shipping and colonial affairs gained at Havre led to his appointment as cabinet minister and minister of marine. In 1895 he was elected president. After two attempts on his life by Nihilists, he died in office.
