Ferdinand V (1453-1516), king of Aragon. In 1469 he married Isabella of Castile. The two principal Spanish kingdoms of Castile and Aragon were thus united, laying the foundation of modern Spain. During the reign of these monarchs the Moors were expelled from Granada. Ferdinand was surnamed "the Catholic." In contrast with the gentle Isabella, he was a cruel, deceitful, despotic man. The events for which his reign is noted are the establishment of the Spanish inquisition in 1480; the discovery of America in 1492; the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in the same year, and the expulsion of the Moors in 1501.
