Finishing

in the manufacture of textiles, a term used to include all the numerous processes to which textiles of every description are subjected after leaving the loom or other machine by means of which the fabric is produced. These processes vary in number and character according to the raw materials used, the purpose to which the fabric is to be put, and the special quality or feature which it is desirable to make conspicuous. Finishing includes washing, starching, pressing, tentering, calendering, watering, glazing, lustering, perching, mending, burling, inspecting, fulling, shearing, brushing, napping, measuring, folding. These processes are explained under the various headings.
