Gnat
nat, a small two-winged insect. The distinction between flies, gnats, and midges is not clear. One of the best known species is the punkie of the northern woods. It is so small that the Indians gave it the name of "no-see-um." It penetrates the finest mosquito bar and is a great nuisance to the camper and hunter. Fortunately it is active during the daytime only. Certain species infest the eyes of deer, wolves, and other wild animals, even turkeys, almost blinding them. See Fly
