Hollyhock

a fine old garden flower allied to the marsh mallow. A native of China. It is to be regretted that flower gardens do not keep up the old showing of brave, erect, magnificent hollyhocks. Seed planted in the spring produces plants that bloom the second season. All that hollyhocks require, once well rooted in a rich corner, is a little protection with light litter in winter. The large, rough, heart-shaped leaves have character. The large, open sessile flowers begin to appear in July and soon form a tall spike gorgeous in crimson, rose, yellow, white, or lavender.
