Hopkins

Johns, a Baltimore merchant. He was born May 19, 1795, in Anne Arundel. County, Maryland, and died at Baltimore, September 24, 1873. His father was a Quaker farmer. He engaged with his brothers in the wholesale grocery business and amassed a large fortune. In 1847 he withdrew from the trade and engaged in banking and in railroad financiering. During the last year of his life he gave $3,000,000 to found the University that bears his name, and $4,500,000 to establish a free hospital. Baltimore is also indebted to his liberality for a public park. See Peabody
