Hoyle
hoil, Edmund (1672-1769), a London barrister. Little is known of him save that he was an expert in all matters pertaining to cards and other games. In 1742 he published a Short Treatise on Whist. Compilations of rules and instructions for playing various card games, dominoes, checkers, chess, etc., are still sold under the name of Hoyle's Games. The expression, "according to Hoyle," has become proverbial. See Games; Sports
