Hundred

in central and southern England, a name for a district corresponding to the wapentake of northern England. The country is divided into one-hundreds, corresponding, no doubt, to the districts which in early times were able to furnish 100 men able to bear arms. The term was introduced into several of the American colonies, and is still retained in Delaware, where a hundred corresponds to the town, township, or parish of other states. See Chiltern Hundreds
