Jalap

jal'ap, a plant of the morning glory family found originally on the table lands of Mexico, in the neighborhood of the town of Jalapa. The root, which is turnip-shaped and has a milky juice, is dried and exported as the jalap of commerce. Jalap is a powerful medicine and is administered either as a tincture or in the shape of a powder made by grinding the root. It is a valuable remedy, especially in certain cases of dropsy.
