James

the name of seven sovereigns of the Stuart family.

JAMES I of Scotland was taken prisoner by the English when but twelve years of age, to prevent the promotion of an alliance between the Scotch and the French. While in captivity he wrote a number of poems, the most noted being The King's Quhair. He wedded a lady of the English royal family. In 1424 he was restored to his kingdom. In 1437 he was murdered at Perth by emissaries of his turbulent nobles.
