the seventh month of the year. In the old Roman year which began with March it was the fifth month, and was called Quintilis. The name July was assigned by Julius Caesar when he reformed the calendar, this being the month of his birth. He gave it thirty-one days. Although the northern day is shorter in July than in June, July is a hotter month, owing to the accumulation of heat.
