Kemble, John Philip

John Philip (1757-1823), a noted English actor. He was a native of Lancashire. He completed his education in the English Catholic College of Douay in France. In 1783 he won success at Drury Lane in the character of Hamlet. Brutus and Coriolanus were favorite characters with hi. He became the manager of the Drury Lane Theater, also a stockholder in Covent Garden Theater. He left the stage in 1817, at which date a public dinner was given in his honor. His later years were spent in Switzerland. See Kean
