Leg

a limb used to support and move the body. The word is Scandinavian. The English word used by Burns and other writers is shank. The German word is bein, equivalent to our bone. Strictly speaking, the leg is the part between the thigh and the foot. A limb used otherwise is known as a wing, fin, flipper, arm, etc. Man, the monkey, and the bird have two legs. Most vertebrates are quadrupeds having a pair of front legs and a pair of hind legs. Over three-fourths of all animals, including insects, have six legs. The spiders have eight; the higher crustaceans have ten; and there are animals, as the centipede and millipede, having over a hundred pairs of legs.
