Mansard Roof

a roof with an angle in the slope so made that the lower part of the roof is steeper. It was devised by Francis Mansard, a French architect of the seventeenth century. Mansard windows are placed in the lower part of the roof, giving an effect of an additional story in the roof. This style is out of favor.
