Millais, Sir John Everett

mil-la', Sir John Everett (1829-1896), an English painter. He was born at Southampton. He died in London. He was educated in France. His first successful picture was Pizarro Seizing the Inca of Peru. He rose rapidly to an influential position among the artists of France and England, and at the time of his death was president of the Royal Academy of London, the greatest honor within the gift of his associates. Other pictures of some note are Young Men of Benjamin Seizing their Brides, A Huguenot, and Chill October. Millais became in a way a court painter having executed portraits of Beaconsfield, Gladstone, Salisbury, Ruskin, Tennyson, and other notables.
