Mulatto

the child of parents, one of whom is a negro, the other a white person. The mulatto has a yellow complexion and frizzled hair and more nearly resembles the white race. The corresponding mixture of European and American Indian blood is designated as half-breed. A quadroon is the child of a white person and a mulatto, and is therefore three-fourths white. An octoroon is the child of a white person and a quadroon, and is seven-eighths white. No attempt was made in the last United States census to distinguish between those of full negro blood and those partly white, though it is believed that, as a matter of fact, 3,000,000 or one-third of the negro race now in America is of mixed blood.
