Phillips Exeter Academy

at Exeter, New Hampshire, was founded in 1781 by John Phillips, one of the same men who had taken part in the endowment of Phillips Andover. He was a wealthy merchant. His gifts amounted to $65,000. The present endowment of the institution is about $400,000, with an annual income of $100,000. There are about 300 students and sixteen instructors. Both of these celebrated academies make a specialty of preparation for New England colleges. They maintain a high standard of instruction.
