PIUS X

was elected Pope by the college of cardinals August 4, 1903. At the time of his selection he was a cardinal, the Patriarch of Venice. His relatives are people in humble circumstances. As a boy, student, priest, and ecclesiastic, he has been noted for studious habits, kindly disposition, piety of character, and zeal in the interests of mankind. He is not a narrow man. One of his first steps was to establish friendly relations with the government of the Italian people.
