Putty

a mixture of whiting or carbonate of lime and linseed oil. It is mixed usually to the consistency of dough. To prevent its drying up, it is packed for commercial use in bladders. The glazier uses it to set window panes. He applies the putty with the point of a flexible blade, using considerable pressure. After exposure to the air for a time, it hardens and binds the glass in place. It is used also by the painter to fill inequalities or holes in woodwork before painting. A little paint may be worked in to give it the color of the surrounding surface.
