Quagga

an animal of the horse kind formerly abundant in southern Africa. It was closely related to the zebra. Head, neck, and shoulders were of a dark brown, shading off to a lighter brown along the back. The croup was gray; under parts white. The stripes were like those of a zebra, but did not extend to the hind quarters. In a wild state the quagga was a beautiful, agile animal. Large droves roamed the plains of Kaffirland. It was hunted by the natives for its flesh and was the natural food of the lion. It is believed to be extinct. See Zebra
