Robertson, William

William (1721-1793), a Scottish historian. He was educated as a Presbyterian minister and became the president of the University of Edinburgh. His History of Scotland was long a standard. He wrote a History of Charles V, for which his publishers paid him the hitherto unequaled price of $25,000. A History of America has little merit. The first two are still valuable works of reference.
