Saracens

sar'a-sens, an Arabic word meaning easterns, orientals. It was applied in the Middle Ages to the Mohammedans, who dwelt in Asia, as contrasted with the Moors, who dwelt in Morocco and occupied Spain. The Saracens had conquered Palestine and occupied Jerusalem at the time of the Crusades. See Crusades; Saladin; Arabs
