SELIM II

surnamed "the Sot," was the son of Solyman I. He ascended the throne in 1566. Among the events of his reign was the subjugation of Cyprus.

SELIM III (1761-1808) ascended the throne in 1789. He was embroiled in wars with Austria, Russia, and France. He attempted to organize the Turkish army on European models, but the Janizaries or native troops revolted and the unfortunate Selim was strangled in prison.
