Sigismund

an emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He reigned 1410-37. He it was who granted John Huss a safe-conduct to the council of Constance and yet allowed that noted heretic to be burned at the stake. Among the events of Sigismund's life and reign were a defeat at the hands of the Turks, a war with the Hussites in Bohemia, and a struggle with the Hungarians. See Constance; Huss
