Sigourney, Lydia Huntley

sig'ur-ni, Lydia Huntley (1791-1865), an American author. She was born at Norwich, Connecticut, and died at Hartford. Prior to her marriage to Charles Sigourney in 1819 she was a teacher in a school for young ladies. In her day, Mrs. Sigourney was a voluminous and popular writer, contributing over two thousand poems and papers to various periodicals. Among the better known titles of her works are Moral Pieces in Prose and Verse, Pleasant Memories of Pleasant Lands, a volume of travel, Letters to Young Ladies, and Pocahontas and other Poems. Though not a strong writer, Mrs. Sigourney's style was pleasing.
