Socotra

or Sokotra, an island in the Indian Ocean south of Arabia. Length, 71 miles. Area, 382 square miles. Population, about 10,000. The surface is mountainous. The chief exports are aloes. The inhabitants of Sokotra were formerly Nestorian Christians. The island was occupied by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, but was annexed by England in 1606.
