Stanton, Edwin M.

Edwin M. (1814-1869), an American statesman. He was born at Steubenville, Ohio. He studied at Kenyon College. He was admitted to the bar in 1836. Twenty years later, after practicing in his native town and in Pittsburg, he opened an office in Washington, D. C. Lincoln made Stanton his secretary of war in 1862, a position which he held until forced out by a disagreement with President Johnson. President Grant appointed him a justice of the supreme court, but he did not live to discharge the duties of the office.
