Strauss

Johann, the name of two celebrated Austrian composers, father and son. Johann Strauss the elder (1804-1849) was violinist and assistant conductor in Lanner's orchestra. Later he organized an orchestra of his own with which he made a number of tours. He composed many waltzes, raising the standard of dance music to a high artistic level. Johann Strauss, the son (1825-1899), composed more than 400 waltzes and several successful operettas. His waltzes are well and widely known. The Beautiful Blue Danube is the most famous among them.
