Tarpeia

tar-pe'ya, in Roman legend, the daughter of a governor of the citadel of Rome on the Capitoline Hill. During a siege of the city the Sabine soldiers tempted her to admit them by a gift of what they wore on the left arm. She expected gold collars and bracelets. As the soldiers entered, however, they cast their shields upon the traitress, whom they scorned. She was crushed to death beneath the weight.
