Trumbull, John

John (1756-1843), an American painter. A native of Connecticut. He was the son of Jonathan Trumbull. He is best known by four great works in the rotunda of the Capitol at Washington. The Declaration of Independence, the Surrender of Burgoyne, the Surrender of Cornwallis, and the Resignation of Washington at Annapolis. He gave most of his pictures to Yale College. He painted portraits of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson, and pictures of The Battle of Bunker Hill and The Death of Montgomery.
