Tug of War

any severe, laborious contest. In athletics, a tug of war is a trial of strength in which the opposing sides tug at opposite ends of a rope or cable. The party which is able to draw the other across a boundary line, or which has the advantage at the end of a given time, is adjudged to have won. Participants must engage with bare hands. It is not allowable to knot the rope, to wind it around the hand, or to employ any artificial means of holding on.
