Winnebagoes

a tribe of American Indians. The name is Iroquois, meaning muddy water. When first known by the French they lived about Green Bay, Wisconsin. They were neighbors to the Chippewas. They were an eastern branch of the great Dakota family. They have been pushed from one place to another. A remnant of 2,000 men, women, and children are found on reservations in Nebraska and Wisconsin. See Dakotas; Chippewas
