All-Saints' Day
a festival instithe 7th century. on the occasion of his transforming the Roman heathen Pantheon into a Christian temple or church, and consecrating it to the Virgin Mary and all the martyrs. It is kept by the Churches of England, Rome, etc., on the honor all saints. It was formerly called All-hallows. In many American Churches a custom has grown up of making the Sunday nearest the 1st of November the occasion of a service in memory of those who have died during the year.
