After having taught in several schools in Massachusetts, he was appointed instructor in history at the University of Illinois in 1897, and became, successively, associate professor, assistant professor, and full professor, the latter in 1913. He devoted special atten- 1 ALWAR tion to the study of the history of the Middle West, was editor of the "Mississippi Valley Historical Review," editorin-chief of the "Illinois Centennial History," edited many volumes dealing with the early history of the Middle Western States, and was the author of "Mississippi Valley and British Policy" (1917).
