Anderson (JOHN FISHER American physician)

JOHN FISHER, American physician, born in Fredericksburg, Va., in 1873. He was educated in the public schools of this city and studied medicine at the University of Virginia and also in Vienna and Liverpool. He was appointed assistant surgeon in the United States Public Health and Marine Service in 1898 and did duty in connection with the yellow fever. After acting as quarantine inspector and immigrant inspector at several ports, he was sanitary observer in several cities in Europe from 1899 to 1901. From 1902 to 1909 he was assistant director of the Hygienic Laboratory in Washington, being appointed director in 1916. He was also assistant professor of hygiene in Rutgers College. One of the most eminent of American bacteriologists, he wrote many articles on his investigations into the cause of diseases.
