Bates (ARLO an American author born)

ARLO, an American author, born in East Machias, Me., Dec. 16, 1850.

He graduated from Bowdoin in 1876, when he engaged in literary work in Boston, and afterward became Professor of English Literature in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is author of poems and novels, including "The Pagans" (New York, 1884); "A Lad's Love"; "The Philistines" (1888); "Berries of the Brier" (1886), poems; "Talks on Writing English"; "Talks on the Study of Literature" (1897); "The Puritans tans "; "Under the Beech Tree"; "Diary of a Saint" (1902); "The Intoxicated Ghost" (1908); etc. He died in 1918.
