Baylen

or BAILEN, a town of Spain, province of Jaen, at the foot of the Sierra Morena, 22 miles N. of Jaen.

It commands the road leading from Castile into Andalusia, and derives its celebrity from the events which took place in its vicinity leading to the "Capitulation of Baylen," signed July 20, 1808, when General Dupont, and about 20,000 French troops under his command, surrendered to the Spaniards on condition of their being conveyed to France by the Spanish Government; but the latter stipulation was not carried into effect.
